Addiction is an inability to stop the consumption of drugs, alcohol, smoking, or any other substance that you know causes psychological or physical harm. Addiction does not restrict anything related to cocaine or heroin but it means any substance particularly chemical dependence. These days due to COVID-19 there are many people who are suffering from financial losses and losing their jobs. Sitting at home for a few months is pushing people towards addiction they never had. Consumption of alcohol, cigarettes are increasing than usual. People are ready to pay double the rate to satisfy their mental illness temporary. Uncontrollably seeking for harmful substances shows that you are calling for stress and depression in life. However, even before the pandemic hit, there were people addicted to these things and now they give a reason to avoid stress they need to drink or smoke.
Drinks or any other habit is just to enjoy once in a while. One should not get addicted to anything in life. Addiction is simply dangerous to our health. If you are upset why can’t you divert your mind towards music, reading, dancing, watching movies, or anything else that can clear your mind and help you be positive? This lockdown was the best chance for you to forget all your addiction towards alcohol, drugs, smoking, and so on but instead a few committed suicide out of depression. What about your family and children or parents after you die? Addiction to anything will only give you a shrinking effect. Addiction to people is also nothing but the same. One should know where to put a full stop, or pause. Do not get addicted to someone who does not even value you.
I agree that social shutdown was not only in just words but in deeds too, it was a complete stop tp visit public places, society activities, etc, but never meant isolation. Infact, this was a chance to connect with people over calls and videos, finding time to communicate with those you could never take out time from busy schedule. Listening to their concerns, helping them through the situation mentally would have helped both. Everyone was sailing in the same boat, the pain of living alone, or no wages was the most difficult part.
Covid was death to many but fearing death is not the solution. Spending time with your family and oneself was the best thing to do at the moment. Without indulging into any sort of addiction, it was time to correct yourself being a parent or a child to help the society too. The urge of going to a Wine shop, Paan shop for betel nuts and cigarettes, somehow buying things even if you know the price is double of the previous or gambling online, will sink you deep inside where you will not be able to find yourself ever again.
Get out of your house and walk for a while, talk to people from a distance, indulge yourself in activities where it can makes you happy, help homemakers with household chores anything that can keep you away from these harmful substances is the right choice.
PS: Crisis does not mean you welcome addiction in your life.
